GOBBY’s EL HONKO MIXED is a double-LP-length musical/audiobook, and the official follow-up to his DFA full-length NO MERCY BAD POET.
EL HONKO MIXED is, roughly, a memoir composed of three timelines interspersed with distended quasi-covers and actual pop songs, all swirled into a larger semi-biographical scope: Dish X, Y, Z function as a videogame OST from the POV of a character who keeps getting reincarnated as a dishwasher through various eras (Middle Ages, Wild West, NYC 2012); CK1-4 are about “sex and the internet and loneliness”; while Leper l-V is a recurring leitmotif about wandering—“sort of about the horror of touring as an uninspired individual and playing bars and basements - also just about having to walk around and the stuff we have to do that involves complete strangers.”
Simultaneously, the narrative of EL HONKO takes Gobby’s formative experiences in New England and on the East Coast (combined with riffs on an uninformed family history/lineage) and paints a cringey portrait of drab New England circa 2017. With a palette drawn from pure pop songwriting / radio theater / tangled jazz forms / nightmarishly cartoonish bing-boing electronics / podcasts / and pounding, distortion-laced noise-rock, the sprawling American-song-form deconstructions of EL HONKO MIXED extend Gobby’s trademark combination of the sinister and silly.
GOBBY is from Boston, Massachusetts. After barely graduating high school by 0.5 percent on a required history test, he went to Roxbury Community College for accounting for like a semester I think while dishwashing at Panera. That was wack as hell so then he went to NYC to further pursue a dishwashing career, while DJing and sometimes performing live music and drawing. His ears haven’t stopped ringing in a
decade - his ear doctor recommended he get hearing aids - he’s still working on that and getting insurance and stuff.
